Sales Taxes: Sales tax payments delivered to cities across Liberty County are up again – this time by 2.34 percent in May as compared to the same month last year. Across Texas, sales tax revenues for cities statewide increased 4.9 percent. Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said, as expected, sales tax revenues statewide have moderated compared to the double-digit growth rate last year. Taking a look at the City of Liberty, sales tax revenue for the first five months this year is up 2.15 percent or $27,657 for a total local take of $1.31 million so far in 2013. Meanwhile, for the City of Dayton, sales tax income this year has increased $45,356 or 5.72 percent. That’s a year-to-date total of $837,703.


Memorial Service: The annual First Responder Memorial Serviceis this Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Liberty Church of Christ, 3201 North Main Street. The memorial pays tribute to law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical and radio dispatch personnel. During the service, there will be a special memorial to first-responders who have lost their lives in the past year.


Prison Sentence: Namann Darrell Roberts has been sentenced to prison for robbery following a jury trial in the 75thDistrict Court of Mark Morefield. According to Liberty County District Clerk records, a jury found Namann Roberts guilty of robbery but not-guilty of family violence. Now, he has been sentenced to nine years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.


Relay for Life: While there are still several hundred dollars in donations to be added in, updated totals show the 2013 South Liberty County Relay for Life has already raised more money than any previous event here. According to event co-chair Sandra Sterling, this year’s Relay for Life has raised $109,000 to date. The annual American Cancer Society event benefits cancer research, education and local patient services.
