Update: It’s been roughly nine months since approximately $18,000 in county funds disappeared from the Liberty County Tax Office. The investigation into what happened to the missing funds is at a standstill. Since roughly $13,000 was in the form of check, money order or credit card payment, Tax Collector Ricky Brown said his office contacted the taxpayers who made those payments. After first checking to make sure none of the missing payments had been cashed, the tax payers were able to stop payment and make out new payments. The remaining $5,000 in cash is still unaccounted for. Whether it was lost or stolen is not known. Ricky Brown said Sheriff’s Department investigators did identify a person of interest however that person was no-billed by a Liberty County Grand Jury earlier this year.
