Otto on Tax Bill: State Rep. John Otto said the field of retail sales is changing rapidly. He said the number 1 issue for retailers is to even the playing field so that those collecting sales taxes are not at an 8.25 percent disadvantage when competing with mostly online businesses from other states who don’t have to collect those same local and state taxes.

Fire:  The Liberty County Sheriffs Department is investigating a fire that destroyed a home on CR 676 in the Dayton area. Three fire departments were called out, Kenefick, Highway 321 and Dayton to help battle the fully engulfed home.  No one was hurt but it is believed several family pets perished in the fire. Sheriffs Investigators say the origin of the fire is suspicious.

Wreck: A two vehicle wreck on Hwy 146 south of Moss Hill Wednesday afternoon is described as a minor crash by Department of Public Safety investigators. While few details were available, best information indicates there were no injuries as a result, however, extrication devices where used to free one person from their vehicle. Traffic on that portion of the highway was closed for almost an hour.

Shred-It: The City of Liberty has scheduled another of their popular Free Community Shred It Days for Saturday April 27th, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Liberty City Hall Parking lot. Liberty City Council Member Diane Huddleston said the shredding service is not limited to Liberty residents. Anyone can take advantage of the free service. For information, call Liberty City Hall at (936) 336 7361.

Closed: The Liberty County Courthouse and all city offices in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland are closed Friday in observance of the Good Friday Holiday. However, banks and post offices will be open for regular hours and Waste Management garbage service will run as scheduled.

Obituaries: Lawrence Wayne Crow, 87 of Liberty. Service of remembrance will be tomorrow at noon at Calvary Baptist Church in Liberty. Calvin S. McReynolds, 89 of Devers. Services are at 2 p.m. today at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Sherry G. Robinson Martin, 69 of Dayton. Services Saturday at 2 p.m. in Kenefick Southern Baptist Church.
