Two Trials: Testimony is under way for two separate trials at the Liberty County Courthouse. Former longtime Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Danny Diaz is on trial for official oppression in the 253rd District Court, visiting Judge Susan Baker presiding. Then, in the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield, Justin Garrett is on trial for intoxicated assault with a vehicle and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.


Candidate Filings: With just two days left in the candidate filing period for the May 11th school district and municipal elections, Dayton City Council, Dayton ISD and Hardin school district each now have contested races. Starting with Dayton Council, the newest filing is Norman D. Brown Jr., better known as Dale Brown. He joins incumbent Greg Hayman and challenger John Johnson in a three-way race for two at-large positions. As for the Dayton school board, former longtime school trustee Larry Wadzeck has filed for Position 2, challenging incumbent Baret Stephenson. Turning to Hardin ISD, there are now four candidates for Position 5. Mike Rives has joined Charles Bolds, John Everitt and Sherry Mettlen in that race. Incumbent Kevin Ladd is not seeking reelection.


Chamber Banquet: The 37th Annual Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet is Tuesday, March 5, in the Dayton Community Center. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. that night. Keynote speaker is John Sharp, chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. The steak dinner will be catered by Ken Owens. Tickets are $30 each in advance only. Senior Fund Raiser: Liberty County Project on Aging is holding a barbecue lunch fund raiser tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Liberty Center in City Hall. All proceeds from the $8 a plate lunch will go toward operational expenses for the meal program for senior citizens in South Liberty County.
