Daytonv Hospital District: Over the past few months, there has been an ongoing debate on the funding of the Liberty County Hospital District and whether or not it benefits Dayton property owners. In early February, Dayton City Manager David Douglas said on a visit to KSHN radio, that talks of dismantling the district had been a knee jerk reaction. The following Monday, Dayton Mayor Felix Skarpa told the Hardin City Council that the option to ask that the district be dissolved is still being considered. That was repeated the next day by the Dayton mayor at the Devers City Council meeting. In addition, both the Dayton Mayor and City Manager said first in Hardin and then in Devers, Dayton tax payers have paid into the district an average of $648,000 per year. However, the Liberty County CAD tax levee for the hospital district shows an average annual tax of $567,828 averaged over 8 years. In coming days, we will attempt to clarify many of the issues that have come up with the latest twists and turns of this story.
