Swaim Says Invest Early In IRA: The IRS has raised the contribution limits for individual retirement accounts or IRAs this year to $5,500 or $6,500 for age 50 or older. Liberty CPA Byron Swaim recommends opening an individual retirement account sooner, rather than later since lost time equals lost interest and therefore, lost money. IRA contributions are retroactive and deductions on contributions made by April 15thof this year can be included with 2012 income tax returns.

Stockman in Liberty: Liberty County residents received their first visit from their new U. S. Congressional Representative Tuesday night. At a town hall meeting held at the Liberty Center, Congressman Steve Stockman of Friendswood talked primarily about the looming federal spending cuts scheduled to take effect at the end of February unless Congress acts again to delay them.

SeniorCenterFund Raiser: The Liberty Senior Center is holding a barbecue chicken fund raiser next Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Liberty Center. The Liberty Senior Center’s board of directors reports the program is surviving, and has made great strides during the last nine months. However, because of the way state-funded programs are financed, the center is delayed in receiving payments for the corresponding funding agencies. While those funds do eventually come in, they are much delayed. With that in mind, the fundraiser will help meet the month to month expenses during the time it takes to receive funding. Tickets are $8 per plate. For advance tickets call (936) 334-7109 or 336-5464.
