Indictment Update: The grand jury indictment against a liberty man, John Allison, contains a second count.  Early information on the indictment was he was indicted for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. We have since learned the indictment also contains a second felony charge of Criminally Negligent Homicide. The indictment is in connection with the death of Liberty High student William Hotaling in a truck/train crash on January 13, 2012. Allison is alleged to have ignored railroad crossing arms and drove across the tracks in to the path of an oncoming train.

Former LMSPrincipal Arrested: Former Liberty Middle School principal, Kenneth Elton Whiteker, is under investigation by authorities in San Antonio following his arrest there in 2011 for indecent exposure. Liberty ISD records show he was principal at the middle school from 1986 through 1991. According to a 2011 report by KENS Channel 5 TV in San Antonio, Mr. Whiteker was arrested by an undercover officer after he exposed himself. That report also alleges the officer said Whiteker admitted to having sex with a 15 year old boy.

Candidate Filing: In the city of Cleveland the office of mayor and two council positions have expiring terms. Mayor Pro-tem Niki Coates has filed to run for Mayor. Mike Penry is the only candidate to file for Position #1. The Position #2 incumbent Brian Eoff has filed to seek a new term.

Open House: Security State Bank is holding a grand reopening and ribbon cutting for their newly completed Liberty Bank Building on North Main in Liberty tomorrow at 10 a.m. Bank President Gary VanDeventer said tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day open house also commemorates Security State Bank’s original charter date. The public is encouraged to stop by.
