Candidate Filing Starts Wednesday: Candidate filing for the May 11thschool district and municipal elections begins tomorrow and continues weekdays through Friday March 1 at local city and school district administration offices. Both Dayton and Liberty City councils have three members with expiring terms.  There are three trustee positions up for election in both the Liberty and Dayton school districts. Also, the Liberty County Hospital District board has three up for reelection. Candidate filing for special districts throughout Texas began January 1.

Property Tax Deadline: The last day to pay 2012 property taxes without penalties or interest is this Thursday. Liberty County Tax Assessor / Collector Ricky Brown said payment needs to be made in person; by mail or on line by midnight January 31st. Failure to make that deadline means interest starting at 7% will begin to accrue on any unpaid amount. Mr. Brown said even if property owners cannot pay the full amount, they should pay as much as they can by the 31stsince penalties and interest is only attached to the unpaid balance.  For information call the Liberty County Tax Office in Liberty at 936-336-4329, in Cleveland the number is 281-593-8415 or in Dayton at 936-258-4705.

Fire Fighter of the Year: The Liberty Fire Department held their annual banquet Saturday night honoring the men and women of the department.  Selected by a vote of the entire department, the paid Fire Fighter of the Year is Brad Taylor. The volunteer of the year honor went to Anson Friar. Liberty Fire Department Chief Fred Collins was honored for his 35 years service as was Lt. Martin Trahan for his 20 years.

Postal Rates: New U.S. Postal Service rates took effect this past Sunday with the cost of mailing a one-ounce, first-class letter increasing by one cent to .46 cents.
