DISD: School safety has been on the minds of many Americans in the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The tragic shooting has resulted in the call for a variety of solutions ranging from stricter gun control to arming teachers. Dayton ISD Superintendent Mike Kuhrt said, as an educator and a parent, he’s not in favor of arming teachers. He did say that having an armed school resource officer on campus is part of the solution for making schools safer.

Chambers Co. SO Changes: Since being sworn in at the first of January, new Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne has instituted a more layered command structure for the department, began instituting new programs and hired new personnel. Sheriff Hawthorne said there is now a captain over each of the sheriff’s department divisions, instead of those divisions all answering to a chief deputy. Sheriff Hawthorne said the various Sheriff’s Office departments have also, all been consolidated under a single phone number, hopefully to make contact easier for the public. Skarpa Will Run: After indicating he would not seek reelection to the position of Dayton Mayor, Felix Skarpa announced he will in fact run for that position again.  He said there are several issues facing the city right now in which he hopes to be involved. ****************************************************

Rotary Supper: The Liberty Rotary Club’s 62ndFish and Oyster Supper is this Friday in Liberty Center at Liberty City Hall. Tickets are $15 each and available from any Liberty Rotarian or at the door or in the drive-through.  Children under five eat free. Serving in the drive-through lane behind City Hall starts at 4:30 p.m. dining inside begins at 5 p.m.
