Big Surprise: Although prosecutors may not like it, sometimes seeking justice means dismissing charges. Speaking at Tuesday’s Liberty Rotary Club meeting, Liberty County’s new District Attorney Logan Pickett was candid in admitting the first felony case scheduled for trial on his watch, did not go as he had hoped. He said they found last minute evidence the man indicted for a home invasion robbery in Cleveland was innocent. D.A. Pickett said the job of his office is to see that justice is done, and in this case he felt they did that by asking to have that case dismissed.

Flu: The number of confirmed influenza cases in Texas continues to grow, and now state health officials say flu cases are also increasing locally. According to the latest reports, Liberty County is showing a rapid increase in positive flu test. Liberty County Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Alexis Cordova said one way to tell if you have influenza is the rapid onset of symptoms. She also said the best thing you can do to avoid getting the virus in the first place is wash hands frequently and thoroughly. Also, flu vaccine is given at most doctor’s offices and health clinics.

LISD Board Election: Tuesday night, the Liberty ISD Board of Trustees called an election for May 11 to elect two board members to three-year terms. Those trustees with terms expiring are June Jackson and Lloyd Pierce. Liberty School trustees are elected at-large. That means the top two vote-getters, among all those who run for that seat, will be elected. The filing period for candidates interested in being a trustee for the Liberty School Board is January 30ththrough March 1.

E-Books: The Liberty Municipal Library has, for some time, been offering E-books to their patrons. The digital downloadable books are made available through a consortium of east Texas Libraries of which the Liberty Library is a member. Called the Piney Woods Digital Library, it allows library users to access the electronic materials, and the collection is growing rapidly. To get access to their fast growing selection of E-books all that is needed is a valid library card from a participating library.

Obituaries: Dolan E. Roe, 71 of Dayton. Services tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
