School Bus: We have reported the Liberty ISD’s recent efforts to examine campus security procedures and policies in the wake of the elementary school shooting deaths in Connecticut. While most efforts have been centered on student safety inside Liberty schools, the safety of students being transported to and from school is another important concern. Liberty ISD Transportation Director Robert Ward said these days’ school buses are safer than they have ever been, especially in regards to a traffic accident, but added there is always room for improvement when it comes to keeping kids and staff safe.

Fire Department: The Liberty Fire Department was called to the Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center. Hospital staff in the always busy emergency room became aware of first an odor and then some thought they detected light smoke. The fire department treated it as an emergency, but soon found it was a florescent light fixture with defective ballast. There never was a flame or major smoke. That incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday night.

Closings: The city offices in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland will be closed Tuesday on New Year’s Day. The Cleveland City offices will close at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, but the municipal offices in Dayton and Liberty will be open regular hours. The Liberty County Courthouse will also be closed Tuesday only. Most banks and all post offices will be closed Tuesday. Local post offices, with the exception of the Batson Post Office, will close at noon today. Waste Management Garbage service will not be in operation tomorrow.

Hebert: On Wednesday, Stephen Hebert will be sworn in as the new Justice of the Peace for Precinct #1, replacing Bobby Rader. Mr. Hebert said he has no plans to make changes to the staff in that office, schedule, office hours or anything else for now. JP Elect Stephen Hebert said he is fortunate that Darla Diaz, the longtime court coordinator of JP #1, has agreed to stay on.
