New Sheriff: Come Monday night at midnight, Liberty County will officially hold the first swearing in of newly elected officials. Since the Sheriff’s Department operates on a 24-hour a day basis, there is no grace period between the time a sheriff elect becomes sheriff and the time he is required to be on the job in that office. Sheriff Elect Bobby Rader will be sworn in as new Liberty County Sheriff at midnight and will then issue the oath of office to his staff. Sheriff Elect Rader said Don Neyland will be Criminal Investigation Division Captain, Mark Ellington has signed on as his Patrol Division Captain, and Crystal Pierce is going to be captain of the administration division.


Closings: The city offices in Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland will be closed Tuesday on New Year’s Day. The Cleveland City offices will close at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, but the municipal offices in Dayton and Liberty will be open regular hours. The Liberty County Courthouse will also be closed Tuesday only. Most banks and all post offices will be closed Tuesday. Local post offices, with the exception of the Batson Post Office, will close at noon on Monday. Waste Management Garbage service will not run on Tuesday.


County Officials Sworn in Wednesday: The public is invited to the official swearing in ceremony for those Liberty County officials who were elected or re-elected to office in the November general election. That ceremony is at 10 a.m. on Wednesday January 2ndin the 75thDistrict Courtroom, third floor of the Liberty County Courthouse. Those officials being sworn into office for the first time include Liberty County District Attorney Logan Pickett, Precinct #1 Commissioner Mike McCarty, Precinct #3 Commissioner Eddie C. Lowery, Justice of the Peace Precinct #1 Stephen Hebert, Precinct #4 Constable Robby Thornton and Precinct #6 Constable John Joslin.
