Volume 27, No. 232 Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Commissioners: Yesterday Liberty County Commissioners approved the move of control of the Liberty County Shooting Range from the office of Liberty County Constable Precinct 6 to the Liberty County Sheriffs Department. Commissioners also issued a ban on the sale or use of fireworks described by Liberty County Fire Marshal Jim Wilson as having sticks or fins. Finally, Commissioners approved a proclamation declaring Tuesday December 11, 2012 as John Hebert Day in Liberty County in honor of his many years of community service.

Areas of Responsibility: The Liberty Police Department kicked off its new program called “areas of responsibility” yesterday. Liberty Police Chief Billy Tidwell said it’s a crime prevention program that harkens back to the “cop on a beat” philosophy that encourages one-on-one contact between police and the community. Liberty Police have divided the city into six areas of responsibility. Each of those areas has a day and night officer assigned to it. Chief Tidwell said those officers will become aware of normal activities within their A.O.R. and get to know residents who live there. Liberty PD has 20 officers assigned to the new area of responsibility program.

Chamber Luncheon: The Liberty Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce monthly business luncheon is next Wednesday at noon in the Liberty Center at Liberty City Hall. This month’s guest speaker is State Representative John Otto. Lunch is $10. Make reservations by calling the chamber office in Liberty at (936) 336-5736 or in Dayton at (936) 257-8926.
