Over 65 Exemption: For residents who are over 65 or about to turn 65, Leanne Neal, a homestead specialist with the Liberty County Central Appraisal District said homeowners who claim the over 65 exemption can freeze their property taxes at the current dollar amount. The only exception is if the property owner adds value to the homestead by making improvements such as building an add-on or constructing a pool. In that case, the original exemption stays in place, but the improvement is added to the taxable amount. To learn more about the over 65 exemption on your home, contact the Liberty County Central Appraisal District in Liberty at (936) 336-5722 or in Dayton at 257-8395. The CAD number in Cleveland is (281) 593-1605.
