Jury Selected: Testimony is set to begin this morning in the aggravated sexual assault of a child trial of Jared Len Cruse in the 75thDistrict Court of Judge Mark Morefield. Cruse is one of 14 adults charged in the notorious Cleveland gang rape of a then 11 year old girl. Jury selection for that trial took place yesterday, and around 1:30 p.m. Monday a jury was seated that includes eight men and four women. One alternate, a man, was also selected. If convicted, Cruse faces 25 to 99 years or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Valley Players: Need help getting into the Christmas spirit or just want to add a little cheer to this year’s holiday season? The Valley Players and Jerre’s School of Acting will have two special Christmas productions this weekend. Both of these youth shows, involving kids from elementary through high school will be performed Saturday at 7 p.m. and again Sunday for a matinee performance at 2 p.m in the Humphrey’s Burson Theatre. Tickets to the two shows in one, “Stocking Stuffers” and “The Toys Take over Christmas”, are $10. For reservations call (936) 336-6699.

Dedicated Revenue: We have reported before on the practice by Texas legislators of using funds built up in the state’s general revenue accounts to balance the budget. Now, State Representative John Otto has been appointed by house speaker Joe Strauss to co-chair a committee to find ways to end the practice. Representative John Otto said after 3 days of hearings about the 14 separate designated revenue accounts, he has decided to file legislation to cap the amount from those funds that can be used to balance the state’s budget.

Drive One: BJ Ford and Ford Motor Company is hosting “Drive One for the Foster Children” this coming Saturday from 10-5. Ford will donate $20 for every test drive of a new Ford vehicle to Liberty County Children’s Protective Services to make Christmas merrier for kids in foster care locally. Monetary donations for Liberty County CPS are also welcome. For information call (936) 336-5232 or (713) 705-3546.
