Country Christmas: The Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Country Christmas Celebration is tomorrow in Liberty and Thursday in Dayton. Country Christmas is free to everyone. Both events include a lighted parade around 6 p.m. followed by refreshments, pictures with Santa, a snow field for the younger kids, wagon rides and live entertainment. Tomorrow’s Country Christmas after parade events take place in the Liberty Center and on the grounds of Liberty City Hall. Thursday’s festivities in Dayton after the parade will be held at First Baptist Church on the street between the Family Life Center and the main church building. ClevelandRape Case: Court records indicate another suspect in the gang rape of an 11-year-old Cleveland girl may go to trial today in the 75thDistrict Courtroom of Judge Mark Morefield. According to public records on the Liberty County District Clerk’s website, Jared Len Cruse is on the trial docket for this morning. Initially, 14 Cleveland residents were charged as adults in the alleged sexual assault of a then 11-year-old girl. Six juveniles were also charged. Six adults and all six juveniles have since entered guilty pleas. Another adult was convicted by a jury in the 75thDistrict Court.


Ragball Tourney: The Liberty Lady Panthers softball team is hosting a co-ed Ragball bash this Friday starting at 5 p.m. in Liberty Municipal Park. Entry is $20 per player with divisions for all ages. For info, call Coach Karen Slack at 936-334-7911.


Football Playoffs: The high school playoffs came to an end for several local teams over the weekend. In Class 1-A action, it was Alto over Hull-Daisetta 35-28. Turning to Class 4-A games, Elgin beat Barbers Hill 45-21 and Manor topped Crosby 49-32 while Georgetown surprised state-ranked Summer Creek 38-21. In Class 3-A, it was LaMarque over Coldspring 35-21. As for Class 2-A East Chambers, the Buccaneers fell to Franklin 34-14.
