Injury Accident: Two Dayton area men were taken by air ambulance to a Houston hospital following a one-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon. Dayton police say 18-year-old Russell Cook of Dayton became distracted Sunday around 3:30 p.m. and lost control of his vehicle on FM 1409 at the Luke Street intersection. The vehicle hit a tree, trapping the driver and two passengers inside. Both passengers, 18-year-old Kevin Brown and 20-year-old Jeff Brown, were airlifted from the nearby Dayton Community Center helipad. Jeff Brown was said to be alert and responsive but suffering from severe back pain. Kevin Brown was said to be unresponsive with obvious spinal fractures and a possible head injury. Their conditions were not available. The driver was not injured in the crash.

School Ratings: Texas Education Agency has released scores for all of the state’s school districts based on the agency’s Financial Integrity Rating System, commonly referred to as Schools FIRST. All seven school districts in Liberty County scored the highest rating of Superior Achievement. The Schools FIRST system assigns points on 20 different indicators that look at a school district’s management of its financial resources as well as accounting control structures and financial audits. Some indicators also reflect student success and the district’s commitment to academic initiatives. Still other indicators look at the taxpayers’ commitment to their local district.

Drug Sentences: Two men have been sentenced to prison for drug violations here in Liberty County following trials in Judge Mark Morefield’s 75th District Court. Preston Lee Walker, 37, of South Liberty County and Stephan Boudwin, 32, of Beaumont were recently both found guilty by a jury of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Walker was sentenced to 35 years in prison while Boudwin received a 15 year sentence. District Attorney Mike Little said these tough sentences are a clear message to other drug traffickers that this type of behavior won’t be tolerated in Liberty County.

Time Change: Daylight savings time comes to an end this Sunday morning at 2. So, set clocks back one hour for the return to standard time before you go to bed Saturday. Experts agree it is also a good time to check batteries in smoke detectors as well.
