VOLUME 27, NO. 194 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2012

Former Resident Murdered:  Two Dayton high grads from the 1960’s lived in the Dayton area most of their lives, Larry Gail Carter, 69 and his wife, Cathey Schwartz Carter moved to their dream home on a ranch in Real County about 10 years ago. On Saturday, Gail Carter was riding his ATV about a mile from the couple’s home when he was shot and killed, allegedly by a neighbor. The shooter, identified as Robert Jones, 54, is said to have dragged Carter’s body to a pile of debris in a shed.  There Jones is said to have shot and killed Carter’s dog and both were set on fire. A car was passing by and Jones is said to have opened fire on the driver, killing her. That’s when the passenger, a juvenile girl ran for her life. Jones, called Lonesome Bob by some, shot and wounded the 16 year old girl. She was able to continue until she reached another neighbor’s house where law enforcement was summonsed. Robert Jones, called a recluse by neighbors, was found Sunday in a ravine not far from the crime at the Jones’ home. Dead of what investigators believe to be a self inflicted gun shot wound.
