W learned from the Liberty High School online newspaper, called Fire Wire, that
a LHS Senior Chesney Bechtel was invited to design and create a Christmas
ornament for the states Tree erected and decorated on the floor of the state
House of representatives in Austin. State Representative John Otto invited the
Liberty High senior to make and paint the glass ornament. John Otto represents
district 18 which includes all of Liberty County, all of Polk Co. and a corner
Montgomery County. Chesney Bechntel's ornament design has 3 unique features
found in Otto's house district. On the ornament is a depiction of Lake
Livingston, which is fed by the Trinity River that flows through Polk and
Liberty counties. Also on the ornament is illustrated the bridge over the
Trinity River at Liberty. This bridge scene, circa 1930, has been an important
transportation route along Highway 90 for eight decades. The third feature on
the glass ornament are pine trees which are a signature throughout most of East
Texas. Art teacher, Marsha Rader, says that Chessney Bechtel was invited by the
State Representative to create an ornament for the state tree on the house floor
with ornament ideas from across Texas during the holidays. .
