dayton isd trustees will meet tomorrow evening to consider hiring their lone finalist for SUPERINTENDENT. we had reported the dayton school board NAMED 39-year-old michael scott kuhrt (CURT) as the lone finalist for superintendent during a special-called meeting back on april 7. there is a state-required 21 day waiting period before that decision can become official. the disd board will consider that action tomorrow at 7 p.m. in THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING. UPON FINAL ACTION, MIKE kuhrt will replacE dayton superintendent greg hayman who announced his retirement back in december. HE HAS BEEN with disd for 29 years, seven of those at the district’s top man. the proposed new SUPERINTENDENT, mike kurht, was born in LEAGUE city and GRADUATED from clear creek high school. his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts came from university of texas in austin AND a master’s from ut arlington. AMONG HIS CREDENTIALS, mike kurht has both mid-management and SUPERINTENDENT certifications. he has been a teacher, principal and policy administrator. he also has worked at texas education agency as a statewide INITIATIVES coordinator. currently, miKE kuhrt is superintendent at giddings isd FOR the past SIX YEARS AND TAUGHT THERE SINCE 1998.  THE EDUCATOR is married to SHANNON, HERSELF an educator, and they have four DAUGHTERS, AGES 6 THRU 11.  the dayton isd superintendent finalist is active in the giddings community where he attends a baptist church and is a member of BOTH the local lions and rotary clubs. he serves on the board of directors of the giddings chamber of commerce and is an ADVISORY director of the GIDDINGS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT corporation.mr. kuhrt also has coached youth softball, basketball and soccer. once more, dayton isd trustees will meet tomorrow to consider hiring their lone finalist for superintendent, 39-year-old michael kuhrt OF GIDDINGS. that dayton school board meeting is set for 7 p.m. in the will o moore jr. administration building, 100 cherry creek road in dayton. details on compensation and benefits will be revealed when a final decision on a new superintendent is made.

The STATEWIDE decision-making body for Texas department of transportation is coming to Southeast Texas to hear concerns and get a first-hand look at the area’s infrastructure. The Texas Transportation Commission will hold its April meeting in Beaumont tomorrow BEGINNING at 9 a.m. at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Beaumont. randy redmond, beaumont district engineer for txdot, said This is a great opportunity for the people of Southeast Texas. texas Transportation Commission oversees all of TxDOT's operations throughout the state. the commission approves all state-related transportation projects plus sets policies and direction for the department's districts. also Attending will be TxDOT Executive Director Amadeo Saenz (signs) and members of his staff. tomorrow’s agenda will include discussion on hurricane evacuation preparedness, a high-speed rail system that could come through the area, and other transportation-related issues. The public will be given the opportunity to make comments at the end of the agenda during a one-hour comment period. Those wanting to speak must sign up prior to the comment period using a card provided at the registration table. The Beaumont District is comprised of eight counties including liberty, chambers, Jefferson, Orange, Hardin, Jasper, Tyler, and Newton. once more, this texas TRANSPORTATION commission meeting is tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the MCM Elegante Hotel at 2355 i-10 south in Beaumont. the hotel is located on the south side of i-10 at the washington street exit.

tri-county mhmr will hold a public meeting tomorrow to SOLICIT input from the community and its clients on local services. the meeting will begin at 2 p.m. at its liberty location, 612 highway 90 west. Tri-County Mental Health Mental retardation serves Liberty, Montgomery, and Walker counties. By the end of fiscal year 1984, Tri-County was offering classes for out-patient mental health counseling and alcohol dependence services plus providing diagnosis and evaluation services for people with mental retardation. they also began contracting in-patient psychiatric services and other mental health services. Tri-County has grown to a more than $19 million system serving about 5,000 people each year. Tri-County now offers many different service options with a staff of experts. repeating, tri-county mhmr will hold a public meeting tomorrow at 2 p.m. to get input from the community and it clients on local service options. the meeting will take place at the liberty office, 612 highway 90 west, on the corner of tennessee and ACROSS u.s. 90 from frank’s tire shop. for information, call evan roberson at 936-521-6120.

congressman kevin brady said his mobile office will be in liberty county tuesday. his eighth congressional district caseworkers will be in tarkington from 8 to 9 a.m. at the tarkington volunteer fire department on highway 321. the congressman’s MOBILE OFFICE WILL be IN moss hill also on tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at fitzpak grocery at the corner of state highways 146 and 105. the mobile office is staffed with congressional caseworkers specifically trained to help citizens with government problems, such as social security, medicare, veterans, irs, immigration and fema issues. rep. kevin brady said it is sometimes difficult for people to travel to his regional offices in orange, huntsville or conroe, so this traveling office provides a convenient alternative. again, THE eighth congressional district mobile office IS COMING TO liberty county next week. congressional caseworkers will be here tuesday from 8 to 9 a.m. AT tarkington volunteer fire DEPARTMENT AND then from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. AT fitzpak in moss hill. for information, call kevin brady’s conroe office at 877-441-5700

SUBWAY BOMB THREAT

ABOUT 7 MONDAY NIGHT, THE SUBWAY RESTAURANT IN LIBERTY RECEIVED A CALL FROM AN UNKNOWN PERSON CLAIMING THERE WAS A BOMB IN THE BUILDING. LIBERTY POLICE OFFICER HUGH BISHOP SAID SUBWAY MANAGEMENT EVACUATED THE BUILDING AND CALLED POLICE. NO EXPLOSIVE DEVICE OF ANY KIND WAS FOUND AND THE RESTAURANT RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATIONS. THE INCIDENT REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

IT WAS A LONG AGENDA, BUT LIBERTY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MOVED THROUGH IT RAPIDLY AT YESTERDAYS REGULAR MEETING. COMMISSIONERS APPROVED, ON A TWO TO ONE VOTE, WITH COMMISSIONER TODD FONTENOT ABSENT, TO INCREASE THE JP #1 STAFF BUDGET FOR JUSTICE OF THE PEACE PCT. 1, BOBBY RADER. JUDGE RADER HAD ASKED FOR AN INCREASE OF $10,000 TO HIS CLERK BUDGET TO HIRE A SECOND PART-TIME CLERK. PRECINCT #2 COMMISSIONER MELVIN HUNT VOTED AGAINST THE MEASURE, WHILE COMMISSIONER'S NORMAN BROWN AND LEE GROCE APPROVED THE REQUEST. IN OTHER ACTION, COMMISSIONERS AGREED TO INSTALL A MOTION DETECTION SYSTEM IN THE OLD WAL-MART BUILDING ON MAIN STREET. , THAT 106,000 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING BELONGS TO THE COUNTY WITH PLANS TO CONVERT IT TO AN ANNEX.  THE COST OF THE EQUIPMENT IS JUST SHY OF $1,000 WITH A MONTHLY SERVICE FEE OF $32.95. ONCE AGAIN, IT WAS LEE GROCE AND NORMAN BROWN VOTING IN FAVOR OF THE ADDED SECURITY WHILE MELVIN HUNT VOTED NO. MR. HUNT ADDED TO HIS VOTE THAT HE THOUGHT THEY SHOULD JUST SELL THE PLACE. COMMISSIONERS WENT OVER BIDS FROM SEVERAL CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES TO BUILD A NEW PCT. #6 CONSTABLE’S OFFICE AT CLEVELAND. BIDS RANGED FROM AS LOW AS $119,000 UP TO $178,500. THEY ACCEPTED THE BIDS FOR REVIEW BUT AT THIS POINT ARE REVIEWING THOSE BIDS. IF ACCEPTED THE NEW CONSTABLE'S OFFICE WILL BE LOCATED ON PROPERTY ALREADY OWNED BY LIBERTY COUNTY IN CLEVELAND. LIBERTY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ALSO APPROVED,  ON TUESDAY, A CONTRACT WITH TxDOT TO REMOVE AND REPLACE A BRIDGE ON COUNTY ROAD 615. COMMISSIONER NORMAN BROWN SAID,  ORIGINALLY TxDOT PLANNED TO CLOSE THAT AREA OF CR 615 FOR AROUND FOUR MONTHS, BUT AN AGREEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED  SO THE CLOSING OF THAT BRIDGE WOULD ONLY BE AT MAXIMUM, 2 WEEKS. THAT PROJECT IS SET TO START THIS FALL. LIBERTY COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ALSO APPROVED A CHANGE TO A PREVIOUS INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT WITH THE TARKINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT TO HIRE AN ADDITIONAL DEPUTY CONSTABLE. BACK IN FEBRUARY OF THIS YEAR, COMMISSIONERS APPROVED THE HIRING OF A PART TIME DEPUTY CONSTABLE TO WORK WITH TARKINGTON ISD, YESTERDAY COMMISSIONERS VOTED TO INCREASE THAT TO A FULL TIME POSITION DURING FOR THE 180 DAYS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. DURING COMMISSIONERS REGULAR MEETING YESTERDAY, THEY ALSO ISSUED A PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION AND OLDER AMERICAN’S MONTH. THEY SENT SEVERAL ITEMS OF COUNTY EQUIPMENT TO BE AUCTIONED OFF AS SURPLUS, AND AGREED TO SELL SEVERAL POUNDS OF SCRAPE METAL FROM COUNTY COMMISSIONER’S PCT. 4. AS A SIDE NOTE, LIBERTY COUNTY JUDGE PHIL FITZGERALD REMINDED COUNTY CITIZENS OF THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER CEREMONY.  IT WILL BE HELD ON THE LIBERTY COUNTY COURTHOUSE STEPS THURSDAY MAY 6TH AT 12:10.

THE TRIAL DATE FOR A MAN AND WOMAN CHARGED IN THE MURDER OF A WINNIE MAN BACK IN 2008 HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR AUGUST. WE HAVE REPORTED IT WAS JULY 6TH 2008 WHEN DAVID DAVIS WAS FOUND DEAD INSIDE HIS BURNING HOME. INVESTIGATORS SOON DETERMINED THE WINNIE MAN HAD BEEN STABBED TO DEATH. THEY BEGAN LOOKING FOR DEVON MEEKS, THEN 19 YEARS OLD. CHAMBERS COUNTY SHERIFF JOE LARIVE SAID THE VICTIM DAVID DAVIS HAD BEEN CARING FOR THE 16-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER OF A DECEASED FRIEND. THE GIRL, MELINA PERRY, WAS MISSING AS WAS DEVON MEEKS, HE WAS IDENTIFIED THEN AS HER BOYFRIEND. INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THERE HAD BEEN AN APPARENT ONGOING DISPUTE BETWEEN MEEKS AND DAVID DAVIS. MEEKS AND PERRY, BOTH THEN IN THEIR TEENS, WERE ARRESTED IN A STOLEN TRUCK IN OKLAHOMA. MEEKS, NOW 21, AND MELINA PERRY, AGE 18 ARE BOTH CHARGED WITH THE MURDER OF HER GUARDIAN, DAVID DAVIS AND WILL BE TRIED TOGETHER FOR THE CRIME. ORIGINALLY SET FOR THIS WEEK, CHAMBERS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY CHERYL LIECK SAID SOME ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE IS NOT YET AVAILABLE AND THE TRAIL HAS BEEN RE-SET FOR AUGUST 16TH IN JUDGE CARROLL WILBURN’S 344TH DISTRICT COURT IN CHAMBERS COUNTY. THE ACCUSED KILLERS HAVE REMAINED BEHIND BARS SINCE THEIR ARREST IN JULY OF 2008. DEVON MEEKS’S BOND IS SET AT $100,000 AND MS. PERRY- WHO IS ALSO CHARGED WITH FABRICATING EVIDENCE AND ARSON – HAS BONDS TOTALING $225,000.
