wildland fire plan

news story

03.30.10

liberty county commissioners are working with texas forest service to develop a community wildfire protection plan. the county has received a $10,000 grant through the texas forest service to identify steps to reduce the risk of fire damage in liberty county. THE PLAN will assess local fire response capabilities. it will also identify private, state and federal lands where what they call fuel treatment is needed to reduce the threat of wildfires. leon scaife, an URBAN wildland interface specialist with texas FOREST service, DISCUSSED THE COMMUNITY wildfire protection plan with liberty county commissioners last tuesday. according to information presented at that meeting, the plan must also RECOMMEND measures that homeowners and communities can take to reduce the ignitability of structures throughout liberty county. leon scaife said there is a BENEFIT to developing such a plan. when allocating federal funds for fuel reduction projects on non-federal lands, both federal and state agencies are directed to give funding priority to COMMUNITIES that have adopted such a wildfire protection plan. a proclamation issued last tuesday by liberty county commissioners recognizes the need for such a plan. that document states texas is EXPERIENCING unprecedented growth and development in areas that were once rural. it is in those areas where development meets vegetation that the greatest risk EXISTS to public safety and property from wildfires. as a result, liberty county COMMISSIONERS are working with the texas forest service to come up with a community wildfire protection plan.

child abuse awareness

news story

03.30.10

it is a tragic fact that nearly 200,000 children in texas are reported as abused or NEGLECTED each year. april is child abuse AWARENESS MONTH, and jennie brown, a forensic interviewer with bridgehaven children’s ADVOCACY center, SAID it’s a time to focus on ways to not only protect children but also prevent abuse from ever OCCURRING. jennie brown said the statistics on child abuse are alarming:

‘audio"

bridgehaven’s stated purpose is to give hope and care to children in liberty and chambers counties who are victims of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. jenni brown said bridgehaven fosters a working relationship with the governmental agencies in the two counties assigned to protect and defend victims.

"audio"

Bridgehaven provides a safe-haven for child victims of sexual abuse to tell their story to a skilled children’s interviewer, like jenni brown. this means in most cases the child victim is only interviewed once. This limits the emotional toll of telling and retelling the crime to multiple members of law enforcement, cps and the district attorney’s office. a proclamation issued by liberty county commissioners court last week recognizes that child abuse and neglect increases the likelihood of long-term PHYSICAL and mental health problems. it also increases the chance of alcohol and substance abuse, continued family VIOLENCE, plus criminal behavior. that proclamation also says effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships created among social services agencies, schools, faith COMMUNITIES, civic ORGANIZATIONS, law ENFORCEMENT agencies, and the BUSINESS community. in other words, the staff at bridgehaven children’s ADVOCACY CENTER and liberty county commissioners court are reminding the community it takes all of us working together to prevent child abuse.
