news story

06.08.10

The Liberty County Genealogical Society will meet next Tuesday, June 15, at 10 a.m. in the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research center. Society President, Linda Jamison, will make a power-point presentation on Orphan Trains and their impact on genealogical research. linda jamison said back In 1852, the New York Chief of Police reported that 10,000 dependent and delinquent children lived on the streets of that city. at the time, New York was the primary gateway for European immigrants arriving in America to start a new life. unfortunately, many of the men died and that left their widows and children without means of support. as a result, from 1854 to 1929, an estimated 250,000 orphaned, abandoned and homeless children, as well as poor families, were placed in homes in other states, primarily in farming communities in the Midwest and Southwest. when researching ANCESTORS, Many genealogical researchers hit what are called brick walls. next tuesday’s program is intended to open a little known pathway to past generations. in addition to the presentation by linda jamison, a PBS American Experience film called "The Orphan Trains" will be shown. This documentary includes interviews with adults that started new lives after riding the orphan trains and joining new families. this monthly liberty county genealogical society meeting is next tuesday at 10 a.m. in the upstairs meeting room of the sam houston center.
