the federal prosecutor who announced the grand jury indictments AGAINST liberty county sheriff’s captain harry leroy kelley is asking for the public’s assistance in locating other weapons that may have been stolen. kshn has reported liberty county sheriff’s captain harry leroy kelley was indicted by a federal grand jury on 107 criminal counts INVOLVING the theft of firearms, POSSESSION of stolen AMMUNITION and CONSPIRACY to commit mail fraud. harry kelley is alleged to have taken those firearms from the cleveland police department’s evidence room while he was a DETECTIVE with that department. during last thursday afternoon’s press conference in beaumont, u.s. attorney john bales said most of those indictments involve a weapon that has been recovered by investigators. however, the prosecutor said he BELIEVES other guns were stolen and he called on the public for assistance in locating those.

that 107 count indictment released last thursday afternoon alleges 55-year-old harry leroy kelly, in his former capacity with the CLEVELAND police department, stole and traded weapons confiscated as evidence and held in the cleveland police department’s evidence locker. harry kelly made his initial appearance last thursday before u.s. magistrate judge keith giblin, pleading not guilty. his houston attorney, jack zimmerman, said they will fight the charges in court. however, if the accused is convicted, the u.s. attorney said the longtime lawman will likely go to federal prison.

harry kelley is charged with 103 counts of possession of a stolen firearm, two counts of POSSESSION of a FIREARM without serial numbers, one count of POSSESSION of stolen ammunition, and one COUNT of conspiracy to COMMIT mail fraud. again, 106 of those federal charges involve a recovered firearm. but federal prosecutors BELIEVE harry kelley may have stolen other weapons from that cleveland pd evidence room. anybody with INFORMATION on the whereabouts of those FIREARMS is asked to contact the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. the phone number for the atf field division office in houston is 281-372-2900.

august in texas means two things – it’s hot and high school football teams are gearing up for another season of friday night lights. liberty high school athletic director and head football coach, shane deel, said - in order to beat the heat - his panthers are starting practice early and tackling the STRENUOUS activities first.

liberty’s first scrimmage is against diboll this saturday morning at memorial stadium.

liberty is still COMPETING in district 22-3a. that seven-team district also includes cleveland, tarkington, coldspring, huffman-hargraves, shepherd, and splendora. the panthers are now in their second week of two-a-days as they prep for the upcoming grid season. their first test against another school is this saturday when they host diboll in scrimmage conditions – the freshman and jv teams face off at 10 a.m. with the varsity squads starting around 11 saturday

THe 21st annual burnham classic golf tournament was held this past weekend at magnolia ridge country club, and ORGANIZERS say despite ECONOMIC woes it was once again a big success – thanks to the golfers and sponsors who PARTICIPATED. the favorite project of THE BURNHAM FAMILY AND BJ FORD, this annual event BENEFITS THE PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED AND MENTALLY CHALLENGED OF LIBERTY COUNTY THROUGH THE TRI-COUNTY MENTAL HEALTH MENTAL RETARDATION SERVICES. in fact, during the previous 20 years, the tournament has raised some $400,000 for tri-county mhmr. while the total funds raised at this year’s event are not yet known, bruce burnham said it was very successful.

bruce burnham said this year’s tournament also honored the late rick humber. turning to the golfing, in the championship flight, kyle jerome and chris rieve combined for a two-day low total of 115 to take the top prize. that pair also captured last year’s tourney with a 117. coming in second place in this year’s championship flight were kyle edwards and carl cromwell followed in third by everett nini and tye grissom. as for the presidential flight, the top team was matt and mitch O’NEAL. they were trailed closely by mark and michael nelson. first flight winners were brian otto and jake McCALLISTER. in the second flight, richie rector and dean anderson took top prize. third flight honors went to bobby pope and lloyd pierce. FINALLY, in the fourth flight, cody ray and casey zamarripa earned first place. so, after two days of spirited golf and three days of ACCOMPANYING social activities, the 21st annual burnham classic is history, and as always, the real winners are THE PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED AND MENTALLY CHALLENGED OF south LIBERTY COUNTY who benefit from the event THROUGH the services and help that exceeds the annual state budget of TRI-COUNTY mhmr.
