LHS THEATER CAMP LOCAL NEWS 06/03/10 THE LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL THEATER DEPARTMENT WILL HOLD "ACTING UP" SUMMER CAMP NEXT WEEK, MONDAY JUNE 7TH THROUGH FRIDAY JUNE 11TH FROM 9 A.M. TO NOON. THE CAMP IS FOR KIDS IN KINDERGARTEN THROUGH 5TH GRADE AND FEATURES CLASSES IN MUSICAL THEATRE, MAKE-UP, ACTING, PROPS, IMPROVISATION AND THEATRE TECH. COST FOR THE LHS THEATRE CAMP IS $75 PER CHILD AND INCLUDES A T-SHIRT. ALL PROCEEDS HELP FUND CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MEMBERS OF THE LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL THEATER DEPARTMENT. COM. community garden news story 06.03.10 as the garden grows, so does the community. at least that’s the idea behind a liberty community garden that organizers hope to plant on the grounds of the former san jacinto elementary campus at the corner of texas and grand avenue. the dream behind the garden began with local state farm agent tracy williams. she is the incoming liberty rotary club president. "audio" that dream is growing and now INVOLVES a number of other individuals and groups. ‘audio" Tracy williams said the idea is to involve the whole community in this very special garden. "audio" one of the partners in this project would obviously be the liberty school district since it owns the property where the garden would be located. superintendent cynthia lusignolo said the district’s legal counsel is working on an inter-local agreement for board consideration. "audio" as the visionary behind this project, tracy williams says she wants to move BEYOND dreaming to doing. "audio" concerning that vision, tracy williams said she sees the community garden being a great learning experience for local kids. music fest news story 06.03.10 the fourth annual texas children’s music festival is this SATURDAY from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at stancil park in cleveland. this annual fund-raiser includes a day of entertainment, food, games, carnival rides, and lots of fun. it all benefits a non-profit group called community and children’s impact center of cleveland. that group’s board president, brenda myers, said one if its goals is to open a youth center to the cleveland area. "audio" brenda myers said the ORGANIZATION has already purchased land along u.s. 59 north of the cleveland city limits. they are now raising funds to construct a building. "audio" saturday’s fourth annual texas children’s music festival includes country artist kevin black, nashville artist angie beck, keith mccoy and the c.e.o. band, plus many more. other ENTERTAINERS are boxer termite watkins, elvis IMPERSONATOR ralph elizondo, and smokey-the-bear. they will also guitar hero and paint ball COMPETITIONs, a talent contest, a horse-shoe TOURNAMENT, and a comedy show. there will be a barbecue cook-off, a cookie-eating contest, and plenty of games, carnival rides, and vendors. there’s also something special for 2010 graduating seniors in attendance. they will have a chance to win a $100 cash prize. it’s the fourth annual texas children’s music festival this saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at stancil park in cleveland. it benefits the community and children’s IMPACT center of cleveland with funds going toward construction of a youth center. according to organizers, it’s not just for the kids, it’s all about the children. admission for adults is $2. all children get in free. hurricane ike $ news story 06.03.10 hurricane ike was one of the COSTLIEST and most DESTRUCTIVE tropical cyclones in u.s. history. estimates place total damage from the 2008 storm in excess of $35 billion. taking a look at some of the costs absorbed by the u.s. government, fema reports they sent $2.94 billion just into the state of texas. that money WENT TO the state plus local governmental entities and individuals in 51 counties in southeast texas that were impacted by the massive storm. about half of that total - $1.5 billion – was directed toward galveston and harris counties. here in liberty county, fema reports expenditures of $58.2 million. of that, $15.79 MILLION went to 3,957 of this county’s residents. another $7.69 million flowed into the county in the form of low-interest s.b.a. loans. fema public assistance – those dollars directed to GOVERNMENTAL entities in liberty county – topped out at $34.7 million. the majority of that - $26.99 million – was REIMBURSEment for debris removal. turning south to chambers county, fema reports federal government spending of $104.05 million. of that total, $15.59 million went to 2,109 chambers county residents with another $14.5 million in s.b.a. loans. fema assistance to governmental ENTITLES in chambers county totaled $73.96 million. of that, $63.8 million was for debris removal. to put that into perspective, just for DEBRIS removal, fema has sent $176.24 million to Galveston County and another $233.86 million to harris county since the september 2008 storm. so, adding up the federal dollars that flowed just into liberty and chambers counties following hurricane ike, fema reports spending $162,227,146 through early may, with still more expenditures expected. |
