pickett on meters

news story

07.08.10

kshn previously reported liberty city council is considering a plan to replace all of the water and electric meters across town with new state-of-the-art meters. city manager gary broz is RECOMMENDING this project because – he says - the current meters are very old and are not ACCURATELY measuring USAGE. as a result, the city has done a study and confirmed they are under billing customers and, THEREFORE, losing money. liberty’s city manager said the city is experiencing a 30 percent loss from the water it pumps to citizens compared to what is actually billed. THe electrical loss due to bad meters is around 17 percent. according to liberty mayor carl pickett, it is important for the city to treat utilities like a business in order to ensure the city’s cost for providing these services is being covered for both services.

if this $2.5 million project to replace meters across the city of liberty gets council approval, it will be funded through certificates of obligation. mr. broz said liberty has some older debt set to expire and interest rates are at a historic low. therefore, he said the project would not change the city’s tax rate. on the other hand, liberty’s city manager did say customers will likely see a change in their utility bills if their current meters have been wrong in reporting USAGE. again, liberty’s mayor said all of this is being done to more fairly serve all liberty residents while ensuring the city covers the cost of providing these services. with that in mind, mayor pickett also invites residents to provide feedback on the city’s website.

"audio"

city leaders invite comments on plans to replace all electrical and water meters across liberty or feedback on any other area of concern, or praise, local residents have for the city. that website can be accessed from ours – just go to www.kshn.com and click on the government tab to find the city of liberty’s logo.
