there is a special DRUG awareness program today hosted by liberty county juvenile probation, and the whole community is invited to this free, informative event. kelly semien, program COORDINATOR with juvenile probation, said this community AWARENESS and drug prevention seminar is today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at liberty middle school on jefferson drive. there will be a variety of speakers, and folks can show up at any time throughout the day. kelly semien said the PURPOSE of the day-long seminar is to raise AWARENESS about drugs, parenting, self-esteem, sexting, plus the growing problem of bullying on the internet and in schools. repeating, this free community AWARENESS and drug prevention seminar is today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at liberty middle school on jefferson drive. the public is invited to this free program all day or any time throughout the day. REFRESHMENTS will be provided.

dayton isd has a new superintendent - 39-year-old michael scott kuhrt (CURT). he is coming to dayton from giddings isd where he has served as superintendent for the past six years. dayton school trustees unanimously approved mike kuhrt as the district’s top man during a special called meeting thursday night. mike fielder, the disd school board’s legal counsel, said the new superintendent’s first day on the job will be may 17. he will receive a salary of $143,000 per year plus an auto allowance, phone allowance and the normal benefits of any school district employee. kshn reported in early april that mike kuhrt was named the lone finalist for superintendent. there is a state-required 21 day waiting period before that decision can become official, which happened thursday with the full support of disd trustees. MIKE kuhrt will replacE dayton superintendent greg hayman who announced his retirement back in december. he HAS BEEN with disd for 29 years, seven of those at the district’s top administrator. the new SUPERINTENDENT, mike kurht, was born in LEAGUE city and GRADUATED from clear creek high school. his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts came from university of texas in austin AND a master’s from ut arlington. AMONG HIS CREDENTIALS, mike kurht has both mid-management and SUPERINTENDENT certifications. he has been a teacher, principal and policy administrator. the new dayton superintendent also has worked at texas education agency as a statewide INITIATIVES coordinator. superintendent kuhrt has been active in the giddings COMMUNITY. THE EDUCATOR is married to SHANNON, HERSELF a TEACHER, and they have four DAUGHTERS, AGES 6 THRU 11. according to mike fielder, mr. kuhrt’s entire family was at thursday night’s meeting, and the district legal counsel described them as WONDERFUL. so, no with a unanimous vote by dayton isd trustees, 39-year-old michael kuhrt OF GIDDINGS has been hired as the district’s new superintendent. the district’s legal counsel described the process as an uplifting experience, and he said trustees have a great anticipation of superintendent kuhrt’s arrival on may 17.

it’s been going on for more than a decade now - a chance to take a child fishing at the ALWAYS popular kidfish that will take place at liberty municipal park THIS sunday. sponsored locally by bj ford and the burnham family, kidfish is an outreach program designed to educate and provide hands-on fishing experiences to children 16 years old and younger. also helping sponsor the event this year is wal-mart. the liberty park pond will be generously stocked by THE state parks and wilDlife DEPARTMENT, increasing the odds of a memorable fishing experience. everything required to catch a fish – such as rod, reel, bait and tackle - will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. BUT IF PREFERRED, KIDS CAN BRING THEIR OWN. while it is not required, children may ALSO raise financial support for kidfish prior to the event. again, kidfish, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. SUNDAY at liberty municipal park. IT’S ALL FREE, AND the event provides children an opportunity to catch fish from a well-stocked pond. PARENTS or GUARDIANS ARE WELCOME TO MAKE THE KIDFISH EXPERIENCE A FAMILY OUTING.
