the state of the national economy appears to be having an impact on local property tax collections. liberty county tax collector mark mcclelland said local property tax collections are falling short of historical trends despite what was a good start to this year’s payments back in january and february.

the liberty county tax collector said it appears those who have not yet paid are property owners who are financially strapped.

mark mcclelland’s office collects property taxes for all local taxing entities except the dayton, devers and tarkington school districts. back in november 2009, The liberty county tax officer sent out property tax statements totaling $59.842 million for all the other taxing entities. that is a minute STATISTICAL increase from the 2008 billing of $59.795 million. the tax collector said liberty isd is among those entities where collections are behind last year.

for those who still haven’t paid their property taxes, mark mcclelland said june is the time to take care of the DELINQUENT amount before higher interest and attorney’s fees get added to the total bill starting in july.

liberty high school has made strides over the past year in the number of its seniors who passed the texas assessment of knowledge and skills test, better known as taks. texas high school seniors cannot graduate unless they pass this exit-level testing in english language arts, social studies, math and science. last year, 18 lhs seniors were unable to pass those tests. this school year, lhs principal bruce lacefield and his staff worked with each senior who was struggling and provided targeted instruction in those areas where each student was DEFICIENT. according to lisd superintendent cynthia lusignolo, those efforts paid off with a much higher passing rate.

liberty high school held its graduation last night, and these remaining five students were able to walk the stage with their peers. now, the high school staff will continue to work with the five to make sure all of them SUCCESSFULLY complete this final state-required OBSTACLE to officially graduate.

TRIALS SET FOR SELLERS AND NUGENT

TWO PEOPLE CHARGED IN ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC CASES OF CHILD ABUSE IN MEMORY ARE SCHEDULED FOR TRIAL THIS FALL. IN OCTOBER 2005, AN 8-WEEK OLD BABY, BROOK GLYN NUGENT SUFFERED INJURIES THAT LEFT HER BLIND AND SEVERELY DISABLED. THE LITTLE GIRL LIVED IN A HIGHLY SPECIALIZED FOSTER HOME IN THE CUSTODY OF CHILDREN’S PROTECTIVE SERVICES FOR TWO YEARS, UNTIL HER DEATH IN NOVEMBER 2007. AN INVESTIGATION BY LIBERTY POLICE AND TEXAS RANGER FRANK HUFF RESULTED IN GRAND JURY INDICTMENTS AGAINST THE CHILD’S PARENTS IN 2006. THE MOTHER, MARTINA SELLERS, 26, IS CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED INJURY TO A CHILD. THE CHILD’S FATHER, GERALD NUGENT, WAS INDICTED ON A 2ND DEGREE FELONY CHARGE OF INJURY TO A CHILD BY FAILING TO PROTECT THE TWO-MONTH OLD BROOK NUGENT OR PROVIDE HER MEDICAL ATTENTION. BOTH PARENTS HAVE BEEN FREE ON BOND FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. DISTRICT ATTORNEY MIKE LITTLE SAID MARTINA SELLERS HAS A PROBABLE TRIAL DATE OF SEPTEMBER 7TH IN THE 253RD DISTRICT COURT OF JUDGE CHAP CAIN. THE DA SAID GERALD NUGENT’S TRIAL DATE SHOULD BE SET AT HIS NEXT COURT APPEARANCE IN JULY.

HOWEVER, IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE INDIVIDUALS CAN DO THE SAME, IF THEY CHOOSE. CLEVELAND ATTORNEY MOLLY LAMBERT SAID THIS TYPE OF LAWSUIT INSURANCE COVERAGE IS CALLED ADVERTISING OR PERSONAL INJURY ENDORSEMENTS. THEY CAN BE ADDED TO YOUR HOMEOWNER’S INSURANCE AT A REASONABLE COST.

DAYTON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION EXERCISES WILL BE HELD THIS SATURDAY AT 8PM AT BRONCO STADIUM IN DOWNTOWN DAYTON - FOR THOSE WHO PREFER TO BE INSIDE THE NOTTINGHAM AUDITORIUM WILL
BE OPEN WITH LIVE VIDEO OF THE EXERCISES FROM THE STADIUM. THE CLASS OF 20-10 WILL HAVE 255 GRADUATES. ONE OTHER THINGIN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER GRADUATES HAVE BEEN GIVEN THREE TICKETS FOR ADMITTANCE TO THE CEREMONIES WHICH WILL BE MOVED INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM. EVEN IN THE CASE OF BAD WEATHER THE PROGRAM WILL STILL BE SEEN ON LIVE VIDEO AT NOTTINGHAM AUDITORIUM..AGAIN THAT IS THIS SATURDAY AT 8PM.
