TOMORROW FROM 5 TO 9 PM, THERE WILL BE A FREE CONCERT AT LIBERTY LAKES RESORT ON HIGHWAY 105, EAST OF CLEVELAND. THE POPULAR BUCK YEAGER BAND WILL BE THE FEATURED PERFORMERS. THE EVENT IS BEING HELD AS A BENEFIT FOR 22-YEAR-OLD CLAYTON EVANS, THE CYPRESS LAKE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER RECENTLY INJURED WHILE RESPONDING TO A FIRE. WHILE THE CONCERT IS FREE, THERE WILL BE BBQ AND DRINKS SOLD TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE EVANS FAMILY WHO HAD NO MEDICAL INSURANCE TO PAY FOR THE MORE THAN $500,000 IN MEDICAL BILLS. MURDER SUSPECT CAUGHT

LAST FOURTH OF JULY, AN EARLY MORNING SHOOTING IN LIBERTY, LED TO A statewide alert for a suspect in THE double-shooting THAT KILLED ONE. the murder suspect WAS IDTENDIFIED AS alberto sanchez. WE REPORTED AT THE TIME, liberty public information officer hugh bishop, SAID two hispanic men were shot with a small caliber weapon SATURDAY JULY 4, 2009, at a party in the 500 block of missouri street. one man died in transport to the hospital while the other was treated and released from liberty-dayton community hospital. EARLY THIS PAST THURSDAY EVENING, LIBERTY POLICE ARRESTED Alberto Sanchez, 30, for an outstanding murder warrant. The suspect had been identified early on in the investigation, however he managed to allude capture for almost a year. Thursday afternoon, LPD Officer Rolando Aguilar stopped a truck on Kentucky St., just south of Grand at 7:20 p.m. As Aguilar approached the truck, the driver and two females got out. The driver then fled on foot into the neighborhood. Police found the driver behind a house in the 2400 block of Grand Ave. The driver resisted arrest, but was brought under control by the use of pepper spray. Neither the officers nor the driver were injured. The driver gave a false name and date of birth to officers, however, Detective Elaine Taylor recognized some tattoos on the driver that matched the suspect in the murder case from ’09. The silver Dodge truck on the traffic stop also matched the description of the truck that had fled from the scene in ’09. after police determined the driver was indeed the wanted murder suspect. Officer Aguilar transported the driver, Alberto Sanchez to the Liberty County Jail and served the outstanding warrant. Justice of the Peace Bobby Rader set bond at $1,000,000.

the ORGANIZATION known as texas chamber of commerce executives has honored the liberty-DAYTON chamber for its website. at a statewide convention, the group awarded the liberty-dayton area chamber with third place in the media category. in past years, the local chamber has also been recognized for its newsletter and the countywide map it PRODUCES. liberty-dayton area chamber president mary anne campbell says the website offers a lot of useful INFORMATION.

kshn previously reported on "the retail coach" - a national retail consulting, market research and development firm. they came to liberty at the request of the city and the liberty economic development corporation to research marketing trends here. retail coach ANALYZED the local market and provided EXISTING liberty retailers with information to enhance their businesses. the research group also provides recruiting services to entice national retailers to an area. according to the company’s research, what is defined as the liberty trade area has potential retail sales of $488.5 million. current retail sales within the same trade area total $135.5 million. that means there is what is called leakage of $353 million annually our of this area. the task of local retailers is to use information on specific industries to stock inventory that attract shoppers to spend that money and its accompanying sales tax locally instead of taking their dollars out of the area. the retail coach has compiled all of this information in a report that includes local sales outlook guides for INDIVIDUAL SEGMENTS of the market. these reports are available at no charge on the liberty-dayton area chamber of commerce’s website. that’s just one of the many services and useful information that can be found on the liberty-dayton chamber of commerce website designed and maintained by chamber volunteer bruce campbell. to view the liberty-dayton chamber website – go to www.kshn.com and click on the organization tab to find a link to that award-winning site.

the adult probation department for liberty and chambers counties has lost another experienced hand with the recent retirement of ken berry. the last day for the 21-year veteran of the department was june 25. that comes on the heels of last november’s departure of probation department director Steve Swan who had been with adult probation for 36 years. ken berry was working for acme brick company in houston when steve swan convinced him to take a job with the local adult probation department in 1989. that same year, mr. berry became the voice of liberty PANTHER football when he took over the home game p.a. announcer duties from coach don hughes at memorial stadium.

ken berry called it quits from that VOLUNTEER announcer’s position, and he was honored by liberty isd at the end of the panther’s football season last october for his 20 years of service to the district. ken’s wife, d’ann, recently retired as a teacher from liberty high school. now, the couple plans to spend some of their time at their property in canyon lake in order to be close to their GRANDDAUGHTER. ken berry said they also look FORWARD to traveling to other parts of the country with their fifth-wheel travel trailer.

A TWO-VEHICLE WRECK IN NORTH LIBERTY COUNTY JUST BEFORE 5:30 P.M. THURSDAY SENT FOUR PEOPLE TO THE HOSPITAL, THREE OF THEM CHILDREN. ACCORDING TO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY TROOPER ABRAHAM MARTINEZ, 17-YEAR-OLD ARIAL MCELFRESH (MAC-EL-FRESH, LIKE IT LOOKS) OF SHEPHERD WAS WESTBOUND ON COUNTY ROAD #2112 OFF FM 787 NEAR CLEVELAND. TROOPER MARTINEZ SAID MS. MCELFRESH LOST CONTROL OF HER VEHICLE EXITING A SHARP CURVE IN THE ROADWAY AND CROSSED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. SHE COLLIDED HEAD-ON WITH AN EASTBOUND VEHICLE DRIVEN BY NATHAN CLOUSE, 25, OF CLEVELAND. TROOPER ABRAHAM MARTINEZ SAID THERE WERE THREE CHILDREN IN MS. MCELFRESH’S VEHICLE. SHE WAS REPORTEDLY BABYSITTING THE THREE SIBLINGS FROM THE CLEVELAND AREA. TROOPER MARTINEZ SAID NONE OF THE FOUR WERE WEARING SEATBELTS AND THEY SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES. WEATHER CONDITIONS PREVENTED ANY AIR AMBULANCES FROM FLYING AND GROUND AMBULANCES TRANSPORTED ARIAL MCELFRESH, A 12 YEAR OLD BOY, 9 YEAR-OLD GIRL AND A 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL TO MEMORIAL HERMANN HOSPITAL IN HOUSTON. ARIEL MCELFRESH AND ALL THREE CHILDREN ARE NOW SAID TO BE IN STABLE CONDITION AT THE HOSPITAL. THE MOST SERIOUSLY INJURED, THE 7-YEAR-OLD, REMAINS ON A RESPIRATOR BUT SHE IS EXPECTED TO RECOVER FROM HER INJURIES. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE, NATHAN CLOUSE SUFFERED ONLY MINOR INJURIES THAT HEAD-ON CRASH ON COUNTY ROAD #2112 IN NORTH LIBERTY COUNTY THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
