lisd press box update news story 06.07.10 it has taken nearly two years, but liberty isd officials say the press box at memorial stadium should be completed by next month. the old 280-square-foot press box was torn from atop the stadium by hurricane ike back in 2008 and slammed to the ground in the parking lot below. robert ward, director of MAINTENANCE and operation for the liberty school district, said the project should be finished by july 15. "audio" according to robert ward, the 480-square-foot press box will have 5 SEPARATE rooms INSIDE plus a top deck. it will be covered in gold stucco. "audio" the project has been delayed, in part, over a state requirement that the district install an elevator. federal disability laws require an elevator for any press box larger than 500 square feet. however, state law has a lower threshold of 300 square feet but allows variances - IF APPROVED - up to the federal level. as a result, the school district requested a variance from the state for a replacement press box that is engineered with 480 square feet of enclosed space. superintendent cynthia lusignolo said the state denied their request claiming the useable roof space also had to be counted in the total square footage. WITH THAT area included, the press box is 960 square feet by the state’s CALCULATIONS. using the state’s calculation method, the old 280-square-foot press box would be counted as 560 square feet and would also have required an elevator. interestingly, both dayton and hardin recently built similar size press boxes, and based on advice from their architects, did not include elevators. while liberty’s press box is about 20 feet above ground, hardin’s is 40 feet and dayton’s towers more than 90 feet in the air. the liberty school district has been working with its insurance company and fema to recoup the cost of that state-required elevator, which is adding an estimated $100,000 to the price of the new press box at memorial stadium. district officials say the new press box will cost about $550,000 when finished. based on information from the builder – bruce general construction of beaumont – robert ward says the new press box at memorial stadium should be completed by june 30. then, the elevator is expected to be installed by july 15. kshn has talked with seen school districts and two experienced builders of such STRUCTURES, and not one thinks the 20-foot high liberty stadium needs the $100,000 elevator. HOWEVER, the state REQUIREMENT trumps experience.

SPLASH PAD 6.7.10 SEVERAL YEARS AGO LIBERTY DID AWAY WITH THEIR CITY SWIMMING POOL AS ITS CONDITION DETERIORATED AND PUBLIC USAGE HAD DROPPED OFF DRAMATICALLY. CITY OFFICIALS, AT THAT TIME, PROMISED SOME DAY THEY WOULD BUILD ANEW POOL. IN THE MEAN TIME, FOR THE SMALL KIDS, AN ALL NEW SPLASH PAD WAS CONSTRUCTED IN CITY PARK. IT HAS BEEN POPULAR WITH VISITORS TO THE CITY PARK FOR SEVERAL YEARS. NORMALLY OPENED BY MEMORIAL DAY WE LEARNED FROM VISITORS TO THE CITY PARK THE SPLASH PAD, WITH ITS MANY DIFFERENT WAYS FOR LITTLE PEOPLE TO GET WET, WAS NOT WORKING. CITY SUPERVISOR AVON (PRO: A-VUHN) MOORE, SAYS THE SPLASH PAD HAS SEVERAL MECHANICAL PROBLEMS. THE MORE THEY FIXED THE MORE WAS FOUND WRONG. NOW MOST OF IT, WE ARE TOLD, IS FIXED. THEY ARE HOWEVER EXPERIENCING DIFFICULTY FINDING SOME PARTS NEEDED. MR. MOORE SAID IT COULD BE AS LONG AS THE END OF JUNE BUT HOPEFULLY IN JUST A COUPLE OF WEEKS THE SPLASH PAD, LOCATED IN THE CITIES BEAUTIFUL 125 ACRE CITY PARK, NEAR THE CHILDREN’S PLAY GROUND, WILL BE OPEN AGAIN. AVON MOORE PROMISED, WITH TEMPERATURES SO VERY HOT, THAT LIBERTY CITY PARK MAINTENANCE CREWS WILL DO THEIR BEST FOR THE SMALLER KIDDOS OF LIBERTY AND SURROUNDING AREA. |
