weekend recap

news story

06.21.10

kshn reported over the weekend that liberty isd trustees have approved a plan to demolish the old mercy hospital. as PREVIOUSLY reported, liberty city council also has approved the proposal that was developed by the liberty economic development corporation. it calls for the lcdc to pay half of the DEMOLITION costs with liberty isd and liberty county each paying 25 percent of the expense. during last week’s lisd board meeting, school trustees unanimously approved that proposal. liberty superintendent cynthia lusignolo told school board members that the DEMOLITION and asbestos removal will cost $114,000. That means lcdc would pay $57,000 while the school district and county would chip in $28,500 each. the proposed deal also gives lcdc the first right to purchase the property or a clear title to sell it. once the property is sold, the three entities would divide the proceeds based on that same formula. if liberty county commissioners give their go-ahead, demolition of the old mercy hospital can begin. a special asbestos abatement permit from the state is for a limited period so all three entities are on a deadline with both that permit and lifespan of the $114,000 removal bid. kshn also reported over the weekend that significant rain north of lake livingston in recent days has resulted in a rise of the lake level and SUBSEQUENT increases in the discharge rate from the lake livingston dam. according to lake l project manager bill holder, the water level on the north side of the reservoir appears to have stabilized. if so, he said the discharges from the dam should only increase slightly over the current 21,000 cubic fee per second, if at all. also over the weekend, we reported the vindicator newspaper, owned by granite publications of taylor, texas, has named a new PUBLISHER to lead the local efforts here. carol skewes, managing editor since last year of the county’s oldest newspaper, now replaces dan moore who served as publisher for the past SEVERAL MONTHS. carol skewes has a long experience in the newspaper business. she holds a bachelor’s of science degree plus an mba, both from the university of houston. the vindicator has CONTINUOUSLY operated here since 1887.

lhs recognized

news story

06.21.10

it’s big news for liberty high school. according to HIGH school principal bruce lacefield, preliminary results on the texas ASSESSMENT of knowledge and skills or taks test indicates lhs has achieved recognized status. bruce lacefield, who was principal at liberty middle school before moving to the high school last year, said that is a big improvement from being in what the state calls stage 1 of a.y.p. or adequate yearly progress.

"audio"

liberty’s high school principal emphasized these are PRELIMINARY numbers and the school’s status can still be impacted by things like drop- out rates.

"audio"

these PRELIMINARY scores also reflect well on the whole district.

the test RESULTS of students who moved after that snap-shot day revert to their old school when the state accountability ratings get released on july 30. therefore, bruce lacefield EMPHASIZED this very special recognized rating at lhs is still PRELIMINARY. he praised the students and staff for their hard work.

"audio"

at the beginning of the school year last august, bruce lacefield INITIATED a program at liberty high school called 212 degrees – that is the temperature that brings water to a boil, causing steam to rise. then, that steam can move something as powerful as a locomotive. similarly, with 211 degrees of effort a person is hot, but it’s that 212 degrees of effort that brings their performance to a boil. this program recognizes students, teachers and other staff members who put in the extra degree of effort to succeed. according to the PRINCIPAL, that program had and has a positive impact on liberty high school student performance.

according to their principal, it is evident great strides have been made at liberty high school. just last year, they were tagged by the state for not making adequate yearly progress. now, it appears that has changed and the school will be a recognized campus when the state’s accountability ratings are released on july 30.
