THINGS CERTAINLY DID NOT GO QUITE AS PLANNED, BUT IT ALL WORKED OUT. FRIDAY’S WET WEATHER PREVENTED BOTH FEATURED SPEAKERS – REAR ADMIRAL BILL PICKAVANCE AND U.S. CONGRESSMAN TED POE FROM ATTENDING. HOWEVER, RETIRED AIR FORCE COLONEL MARK MCCLELLAND DID A GREAT JOB STEPPING IN WITH ABOUT 30 MINUTES NOTICE. ALL IN ALL, IT WAS AN INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION EVENT TO REMEMBER AS SOUTH LIBERTY COUNTY CELEBRATED THE FOURTH ON THE SECOND, LAST FRIDAY NIGHT IN THE LIBERTY MUNICIPAL PARK. weekend recap news story 07.05.10 over the weekend, kshn reported a $1 million bond has been set on a murder suspect who has been a fugitive for a year. it was a july 4, 2009, shooting at a party in the 500 block of missouri street in liberty. the suspect arrested thursday is IDENTIFIED AS alberto sanchez. WE REPORTED last year that two men were shot with a small caliber weapon on JULY 4. one of those men - antonio romero - died in transport to the hospital while the other was treated and released from liberty-dayton community hospital. THIS PAST THURSDAY EVENING, almost a year later, Officer Rolando Aguilar stopped a truck on Kentucky Street, just south of Grand avenue at 7:20 p.m. As officer Aguilar approached the truck, the driver and two females got out. The driver – IDENTIFIED as 30-year-old alberto sanchez - then fled on foot into the neighborhood. it took a dose of pepper spray to bring the suspect under control. Neither the city police officers nor murder suspect alberto sanchez were injured. Justice of the peace pct. 1 bobby rader set bond at $1 million on the murder suspect – a fugitive for almost a year. also on saturday, we reported on a thursday afternoon accident that sent four people to a houston hospital. according to dps trooper abraham martinez, 17-year-old arial mcelfresh (mac-EL-Fresh) of shepherd was westbound on county road 2112 off fm 787 near cleveland when she lost control of her vehicle coming out of a sharp curve. she collided head-on with an EASTBOUND vehicle driven by 25-year-old nathan clouse of cleveland. officers said weather conditions prevented any air ambulances from flying, so ground ambulances transported arial mcelfresh and three children – ages 12, 9, and 7 – to memorial hermann hospital. at last report, all four were in stable condition. coushatta trip news story 07.05.10 reservations are being taken for a july 22 charter bus trip to grand coushatta resort and casino in kinder, louisiana. liberty-dayton area chamber of commerce is sponsoring the first class tours coach, and those who have taken this luxury charter bus trip in the past have said it is a great one-day getaway. the bus will leave on thursday, july 22, at 8:30 a.m. from the thrif-tee food center parking lot on main street in liberty. it will return around 8 that evening to the same location. the bus is equipped with reclining seats, restrooms, dvd and vcr players, television monitors and cd players. snacks, water and games also will be supplied. the round-trip bus ride is $15, but space is limited. to reserve your seat, call the liberty-dayton area chamber office at 936-336-5736. 4-h horse group News story 07.05.10 the celebrated liberty county 4-h HORSE mounted drill team will hold its annual dress rehearsal tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the trinity valley exposition ARENA. the public is invited to see the reigning state champions in fast freestyle as they prepare for this year’s state finals in abilene. during tomorrow’s dress REHEARSAL, the liberty county 4-h HORSE mounted drill team will hold a silent auction and raffle. there will also be concessions, including barbecue and drinks. the liberty county mounted 4-h drill team has been IMMENSELY successful in recent years. from 2003 through 2009, the team has won the state championship in either fast freestyle or PRECISION. then in 2007 they were state champions in both events. they nearly repeated that feat in 2008, missing out by one point in the freestyle event and winning state in precision riding. last year, the liberty county mounted 4-h drill team won the state championship in fast freestyle and placed third in precision riding. this group of talented 4-h kids will demonstrate their skills on horseback tomorrow beginning at 7 p.m. at the tve fairgrounds. there is no charge to watch and to support these champions. hunter safety class news story 07.05.10 Liberty Police Department recently sent two of its officers to a Texas Hunter Education Program instructors’ course. LIBERTY pd Lt. Larry Beard and Officer Josh Cummins are now certified Instructors and will offer the state’s hunter education training course july 30-31 in liberty. Under Texas law, any person born on or after September 2, 1971, must complete a Hunter Education Training Course to be legally licensed to hunt in the state of Texas. liberty pd’s class will follow the state guidelines of 10 hours of training over two days. The classes will be held friday, july 30, from 7 to 10 p.m. and saturday, july 31, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the $15 course will be held in the training room at liberty pd on lakeland drive. liberty police public INFORMATION officer hugh bishop said The purpose of this program is to produce safe, responsible, and knowledgeable hunters and shooters. the CLASSES teach firearm and hunter safety while promoting hunting ethics and compliance with state hunting regulations. the course is also designed to combat poaching, promote wise use of sustainable resources and enhance hunting traditions. The REQUIREMENTS include a Hunter Skills Trail, which will be conducted outdoors and cover hunting scenarios, obstacles, the use of camouflage, and also trailing wounded game. liberty police lt larry Beard and officer josh Cummins are both hunters, and they’re eager to provide this HUNTER safety course. again, it’s on july 30 and 31 here in liberty. for information or to register, Contact Officer Josh Cummins or Lieutenant Larry Beard at the Liberty Police Department at 936-336-5666.
