HURRICANE PREDICTIONS news story 05.28.10 officials at the national oceanic and atmospheric ADMINISTRATION have joined the growing list of experts who are predicting an active to extremely active hurricane season. on thursday, noaa researchers projected 14 to 23 named storms, with 8 to 14 of THOSE reaching HURRICANE strength. they also are predicting 3 to 7 will reach major hurricane strength with winds of at least 111 miles per hour. the historical average is 9.6 named storms per season. this season begins june 1 and runs through november 30. according to a colorado state university report, the experts expect moderate el nino conditions to transition to NEUTRAL conditions during this year’s hurricane season. this weakening of el nino conditions combined with a very strong warming for the tropical atlantic are the primary REASONS for their active storm forecast. president barack obama named this week as national hurricane preparedness week. noaa and fema officials are encouraging those living in hurricane-prone areas to use this time to review their overall preparedness for what most experts agree will be a very active tropical storm season. for tips and access to weather information, go to our website – www.kshn.com – and click on the disaster preparedness link on our front page. from there, you can link to the national weather service, the national hurricane center, supply tips and lists plus other disaster preparedness links. memorial day news story 05.22.09 the 31st annual memorial day service at palms memorial park SOUTH OF DAYTON IS this monday, may 31. hosted by sterling funeral home and palms memorial park, the annual event pays tribute to military personnel who lost their lives in american wars. Michael page, managing partner of allison funeral home in liberty and palms memorial park in dayton, says this year’s service includes patriotic music and military veteran speakers. "audio" Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. By the late 1800s, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day. after World War I, these observances evolved to honoring those who had died in all of America's wars. THEN In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. Today, Memorial Day is celebrated across america. the biggest is Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. locally, palms memorial park will hold their 31st annual memorial day service beginning at 1 p.m. this monday in palms memorial park on s.h. 146. The public is invited to this service honoring those who died protecting america in times of war.
celebrate devers news story 05.28.10 celebrate devers u.s.a. is tonight, and organizers say it is a great way to honor u.s. military veterans and a fun way to kick off the upcoming memorial day weekend. devers isd and devers volunteer fire department invite the public to this outdoor celebration this evening from 6 to 9 at the devers track field in downtown devers. the event includes a patriotic "drop in" by the ground rush skydiving team, food provided by the devers volunteer fire department, games for the kids, and face painting. there will also be music, group dancing, and a 30-minute walk-a-thon. folks can participate in what’s called "cell phones for soldiers". this program collects cell phones which are then redeemed for pre-paid phone cards. you can donate your old cell phones to help soldiers stay in contact with their loved ones at home. admission to celebrate devers u.s.a. is free. the fun starts this evening at 6 and ends at 9 with a fireworks display accompanied by patriotic music. it’s TONIGHT at the devers track field in downtown devers.
kountry weekend news story 05.28.10 mark your calendars for the third annual kenefick kountry weekend on june 11 and 12. this community event raises money for both the kenefick civic center and the kenefick volunteer fire department. it kicks off at 7 p.m. friday, june 11, with the start of a barbecue cookoff at the civic center. then on saturday, june 12, there is a community baking contest at 9 a.m. also at the civic center. barbecue plates will be sold for $8 beginning at 11 a.m. june 12 at the kenefick volunteer fire department. then, awards will be announced at 3 at the kenefick civic center followed at 8 p.m. by an auction and a dance featuring a live band. the kenefick volunteer fire department is pre-selling whole briskets for $40 through this coming tuesday, june 1. to order a whole brisket and help the kenefick community, call the fire department at 258-0557. repeating, mark your calendars for kenefick kountry weekend on june 11 and 12.for information, to donate items for this event, or to get your raffle tickets, call 936-258-8645 or 258-0557. friends of trr news story 05.28.10 one of the jewels of liberty county is the trinity river national wildlife refuge. the local federal land offers visitors an opportunity to participate in many outdoor activities, such as bird and wildlife watching, boating, KAYAKING, fishing and hunting, just to name a few. according to refuge manager stuart marcus, one reason for the refuge’s success is a group named "friends of trinity river refuge". he said members of this organization donate thousands of hours each year to make the refuge a better place to visit for us all. "audio" friends of trinity river refuge was formed back in july 2000. the group’s members are committed to PRESERVING and enhancing the refuge through conservation, research, EDUCATION, and occasionally pure sweat. stuart marcus said the organization has a website that provides plenty of useful information on their activities and the refuge. "audio" this friends of trinity river refuge website offers information on the organization plus an events calendar, membership information, and photographs. it also has website links to the REFUGE’s own site, friends of the anahuac national wildlife refuge, the lower trinity valley bird club, houston audubon society, and the liberty-dayton area chamber. a membership to this non-profit volunteer organization is $10 a year.
